SLURRY SEAL - GENERALITIES AND SPECIFICATIONS

SLURRY SEAL HAS BEEN USED IN BRAZIL FOR FOUR YEARS. ADOPTION OF THE GRANULOMETRIC SPECIFICATIONS OF THE "NATIONAL SLURRY-SEAL ASSOCIATION" HAS BEEN PROPOSED BECAUSE THEIR SPECIFICATION PROVIDES FOR FILLING OF THE CREVICES, FILLING OF THE CREVICES AND GENERAL RENEWAL, AND APPLICATION OF MULTI-LAYERS FOR RESURFACING. THE BRAZILIAN EXPERIENCE SHOWS THAT THE OLD ASTM SPECIFICATIONS FOR EMULSIONS MUST BE REJECTED, SINCE THEY DO NOT ALLOW FOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ANIONIC AND CATIONIC EMULSIONS. THE NEW SPECIFICATIONS OF THE BRAZILIAN INSTITTUTE OF OIL SHOULD BE ADOPTED. THE ANIONIC EMULSIONS HAVE A RUPTURE TIME VARYING FROM 4 TO 6 HOURS BUT THE CATIONIC EMULSIONS BREAK IN 15 MINUTES. THE SPEED OF RUPTURE OF THE CATIONIC EMULSIONS IS CONTROLLED BY AN ADDITIVE SPRAYED OVER THE AGGREGATE MIX. THE CATIONIC EMULSIONS ARE ESPECIALLY RECOMMENDED FOR THE SURFACING OF AIRPORTS AND STREETS; TRAFFIC MAY BE REOPENED 2 HOURS AFTER THE APPLICATION. THE ANIONIC EMULSIONS BREAK MUCH MORE SLOWLY AND DO NOT ALLOW FOR THE REOPENING OF TRAFFIC BEFORE A MINIMUM OF SIX HOURS. THEY CAN BE USED ON HIGHWAYS. THE ANIONIC EMULSIONS ALLOW FOR A BETTER FINISHING THAN THE CATIONIC ONES. THE ANIONIC EMULSIONS WHEN THEY ARE WELL CALCULATED, HAVE THE SAME RESISTANCE TO ABRASION AS THE CATIONIC EMULSIONS. A MODIFIED DURIEZ FORMULA WAS PROPOSED FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE BINDER CONTENT OF SLURRY SEALS. /RRI/
