DURABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF ASPHALTIC MATERIALS

ASIDE FROM TRAFFIC SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS, BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS MUST PERFORM THREE MAJOR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS: PROVIDE STRUCTURAL STABILITY UNDER TRAFFIC LOAD, WITHSTAND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS AND THUS RETAIN THE DESIRED STRUCTURAL STABILITY, AND WITHSTAND THE EFFECT OF REPEATED WHEEL LOAD APPLICATIONS OVER A DESIGNATED SERVICE LIFE. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A RATIONAL PAVEMENT ANALYSIS CONTAINS THREE SEPARATE DESIGN CRITERIA: STABILITY, DURABILITY, AND FATIGUE RESISTANCE, THE ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE OF THE SECOND BEING THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELATIONS EXPRESSING THE CHANGES IN THE PHYSICAL OR RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES AS RELATED TO THE BASIC PROPERTIES OF THE MIX CONSTITUENTS. MIXTURE CHANGES ARE ASSOCIATED PRIMARILY WITH THE AGING SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE BINDER AND ITS INTERACTION WITH THE MINERAL AGGREGATE. RESEARCH WAS UNDERTAKEN TO EVALUATE AND CHARACTERIZE THOSE PROPERTIES OF BINDERS AND MIXTURES THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OBSERVED AGING PHENOMENA. THREE SEPARATE TASKS WERE SET: TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF AGING ON THE FUNDAMENTAL PARAMETERS, SUCH AS CREEP AND OTHER VISCOELASTIC RESPONSES, THAT DESCRIBED THE BEHAVIOR OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES; TO FIND FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE AGING OF THE ASPHALT BINDER AND THE BEHAVIOR OF THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE THAT COULD BE USED TO PREDICT AND ANTICIPATE FIELD PERFORMANCE; AND TO PROPOSE APPROPRIATE MEASURES FOR APPLYING THESE FINDINGS TO THE SELECTION OF MATERIALS IN THE DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS.
