USE OF SYNTHETIC RUBBER-IN-ASPHALT PAVEMENT TO DETERMINE MIXTURE BEHAVIOR, PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE AND THERMORHEOLOGIC PROPERTIES

MATERIALS, TEST FACILITIES AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES REQUIRED CAREFUL AND COMPLETE STUDY AND ATTENTION TO MATCH THE CAREFULLY PLANNED SAMPLING, TESTING, AND MEASUREMENT PROGRAMS TO FACILITATE THE PROJECT. THE 16 SECTIONS OF THE EXPERIMENT HAD TO BE CONSTRUCTED AS 16 SEPARATELY DESIGNED, 150 FOOT LONG PAVEMENTS. THE FIVE FACTORS REQUIRED THE THICKNESS OF ASPHALTIC SURFACE (T) AND OF THE GRANULAR BASE (B) TO BE VARIED BETWEEN THE ACTUAL DESIGN THICKNESS FOR THE PROJECT AND ONE-HALF THAT THICKNESS. THE PAVING MIXTURE WAS VARIED TO INCLUDE: (1) ASPHALT CONTENT (C) AT 0.9 AND 1.1 TIMES DESIGN VALUE, (2) ASPHALT VISCOSITY TYPE (V)--ONE LOW VISCOSITY AND ONE HIGH VISCOSITY ASPHALT OF THE 85-100 PENETRATION GRADE, AND (3) RUBBER SOLIDS (S) IN THE QUANTITIES 0% AND 3%. THE MAIN EFFECTS OF THESE FIVE FACTORS T, B, S, V, C AND THE TEN FIRST ORDER INTERACTIONS, TB, TS, TV, TC, BS, BV, SV, SC, VC, ARE DETERMINED BY STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. COMPLETE TABLES OF THE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE ARE OFFERED CONTAINING ALL OF THE VITAL STATISTICS ON SIGNIFICANCE OF EFFECTS AND INTERACTIONS. THE RUBBERIZING PROCESS IS DESCRIBED AS IT WAS DEVELOPED DURING PLANT OPERATION. AN ELEMENTARY PROCEDURE, SUGGESTED BY GOODYEAR TIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY, FOR MEASURING THE SYNTHETIC RUBBER LATEX FLOW THROUGH A DEEP NOTCHED WEIR PROVED PRACTICAL AND EFFECTIVE ON THE PROJECT. IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT 16 DIFFERENT, 150 FOOT LONG PAVEMENTS WERE BUILT FOR THIS EXPERIMENT IN TWO DAY'S WORK, WITH THE CONTRACTOR'S LARGE CAPACITY MIXING PLANT AND PAVING EQUIPMENT, RESULTS SHOW THAT SPECIFICATIONS AND EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS WERE OBTAINED THROUGHTOUT. A NON- UNIFORMITY OF SUBGRADE DEFLECTIONS AND DENSITIES WAS DISCOVERED DUE TO NONUNIFORM COMPACTION AROUND TWO BOX CULVERTS ON THE PROJECT WHICH MAY CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS IN FUTURE ANALYSES. TOWARD SOLVING THIS MATTER A RELATION HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BETWEEN SUBGRADE AND SURFACE DEFLECTIONS WITH A WORKABLE METHOD FOR ADJUSTING BIASED DEFLECTIONS. /AUTHOR/
