A NEW OUTLOOK ON THE DESIGN OF SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENTS

THE FACTORS WHICH AFFECT THE QUANTITY OF BINDER THAT SHOULD BE APPLIED AND THE SPREAD RATIO OF AGGREGATE IN SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENTS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE CONDITION OF EXISTING ROAD SURFACES WHICH REQUIRE TREATMENT OR RETREATMENT. DATA ARE PRESENTED WHICH SHOW THAT IN A ROAD WITH A SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENT, EMBEDMENT OF SHIPPINGS INTO THE UNDERLYING SURFACE TAKES PLACE. A NEW TEST, WHICH CAN BE USED TO QUANTIFY THE DEGREE OF EMBEDMENT EXPECTED UNDER VARIOUS CLIMATIC CONDITIONS, IS INTRODUCED TO SINGLE SURFACE-TREATMENT DESIGN. A RATIONAL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS PRESENTED WHICH TAKES INTO ACCOUNT ALL THE RECOGNIZED FACTORS AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE OF SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENTS. AN EXAMPLE ILLUSTRATING THE USE OF SUCH A DESIGN METHOD IS GIVEN, AS WELL AS ITS APPLICATION TO ACTUAL ROAD EXPERIMENTS. PERFORMANCE DATA FROM THE EXPERIMENTS SUBSTANTIATE THAT THE DATA PRESENTED ARE REASONABLY RELIABLE FOR A VARIETY OF ROAD CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
