AN EVALUATION OF SURFACE COURSE MIXES DESIGNED TO RESIST STUDDED TIRE WEAR

THE USE OF STUDDED TIRES IS CAUSING SERIOUS DAMAGE TO ONTARIO PAVEMENTS. THE INCREASED MAINTENANCE COSTS RESULTING FROM THE EXCESSIVE WEAR CAUSED BY THE STUDS IS EXPECTED TO BE SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR. EXPERIMENTAL ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACE COURSES DESIGNED TO RESIST THE TYPE OF WEAR PRODUCED BY STUDDED-TIRES WERE LAID ON ONE OF THE PROVINCE'S MORE HEAVILY-TRAVELLED HIGHWAYS IN THE FALL OF 1969. THESE MIXES, WHICH HAVE NOW BEEN SUBJECTED TO THE WEAR OF STUDDED TIRES OVER THE WINTER OF 1969-70, ARE DESCRIBED AND EVALUATED IN THIS REPORT. TWENTY-SEVEN DIFFERENT MIXES WERE PLACED IN 300 FT. TEST SECTIONS; MIX COMBINATIONS OF TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF HARD, COARSE AGGREGATE, SEVERAL TYPES OF FINE AGGREGATE AND SOME ASBESTOS FILLED MIXES WERE INCLUDED. SKID RESISTANCE VALUES AND PERCENTAGE COMPACTION ARE GIVEN FOR ALL TEST SECTIONS. TWO METHODS OF MEASURING THE WEAR ON THE PAVEMENT WERE USED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE WINTER AND THESE ARE DISCUSSED. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WERE ANALYZED BY STATISTICAL METHODS AND CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN AT A SIGNIFICANT PROBABILITY LEVEL. THE DATA ARE PRESENTED IN CONDENSED TABLES AND GRAPHS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE TYPE OF PAVEMENT WEAR OBSERVED. HARD VOLCANIC OR SYNTHETIC STONES WERE MUCH MORE WEAR RESISTANT THAN THE SOFTER SEDIMENTARY STONES. COARSER MIXES WITH A HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF STONE WERE MORE WEAR RESISTANT. WEAR FIRST APPEARED AS LOSS OF MATRIX BETWEEN THE COARSE AGGREGATE PARTICLES. AS MATRIX LOSS BECAME MORE SEVERE SOME COARSE AGGREGATE PARTICLES WERE LOST. THE MOST WEAR RESISTANT MATRIXES WERE THOSE HAVING A HIGH ASPHALT CONTENT. THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY USING EITHER A FINE SAND-FILLER BLEND OR BY USING ASBESTOS FIBRE. THE COMPOSITION OF THE FINE AGGREGATE INFLUENCED THE DEGREE TO WHICH THE MAT WAS COMPACTED. THE AMOUNT OF WEAR WAS ALSO RELATED INVERSELY TO THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION. /DOHC/
