ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR BEAMS AND COLUMNS ARE DEVELOPED FOR USE WITH A RECTANGULAR STRESS BLOCK. ALTHOUGH THE USE OF DESIGN CHARTS IS RECOMMENDED, IT IS SHOWN THAT MOST COMPUTATIONS ARE SIMPLE AND PRACTICAL WITHOUT SUCH AIDS. IT IS SHOWN THAT A GREAT VARIETY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE MEMBERS CAN BE DESIGNED WITH ONLY THE AIDS CONTAINED IN THIS REPORT, OR EVEN WITHOUT SUCH AIDS. IF ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN IS USED TO PRODUCE SHALLOWER BEAMS, MORE ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO DEFLECTIONS. HOWEVER, ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN NEED NOT LEAD AT ONCE TO SHALLOWER MEMBERS. IT IS THE WRITER'S BELIEF THAT ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN AIDS ARE BETTER AND SIMPLER TO SHORTEN AVAILABLE DESIGN PROCEDURES.
