WELDED PLATE GIRDERS - A SYMPOSIUM

PAPERS PRESENTED AT THIS SYMPOSIUM DEAL WITH: (1) STRENGTH IN BENDING, (2) STRENGTH IN SHEAR, AND (3) STRENGTH UNDER COMBINED BENDING AND SHEAR. AN ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF THE STATIC LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF PLATE GIRDERS SUBJECTED TO BENDING. THE PHENOMENON OF WEB-BUCKLING IS DISCUSSED TO EXPLAIN THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR AND THEORY. THE CONVENTIONAL PLATE-BUCKLING THEORY PREDICTS THE LOAD INTENSITY UNDER WHICH A PLANE PLATE SUBJECTED TO EDGE STRESSES DEFLECTS OUT OF ITS PLANE. A SOMEWHAT SMALLER FACTOR OF SAFETY WAS APPLIED TO WEB-BUCKLING THAN THAT USED FOR PRIMARY COLUMN-BUCKLING. THE INVESTIGATION DEMONSTRATED THAT THE CONCEPT OF EXPRESSING THE POST-BUCKLING STRENGTH OF A GIRDER AS A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF THE WEB-BUCKLING STRENGTH IS UNTENABLE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED BY A STRENGTH PREDICTION WHICH CONSIDERS THE INFLUENCE OF THE FLANGES AND TRANSVERSE STIFFENERS ON THE OVER-ALL CARRYING CAPACITY. THE STRENGTH OF GIRDERS WITH RESPECT TO BENDING IS ANALYZED. A REPORT IS GIVEN ON A STUDY OF SHEAR STRENGTH OF PLATE GIRDERS. NEW DESIGN RULES ARE PROPOSED IN UTILIZING THE POST -BUCKLING STRENGTH OFFERED BY THE TRANSVERSE STIFFENING OF A GIRDER. A SIMPLE BUT GENERAL FORMULA WAS DERIVED FOR THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH OF STEEL GIRDERS WITH FLANGES NOT RESISTANT TO MEMBRANE TENSION AND WITH WEBS SO SLENDER THAT A CERTAIN TENSION ACTION MIGHT DEVELOP. A FUNCTIONAL DEPENDENCE OF THE SHEAR STRENGTH ON THE PRINCIPLE PARAMETERS IS PROPOSED. A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF POSSIBLE INTERACTION BETWEEN BENDING MOMENTS AND SHEAR FORCES ON THE CARRYING CAPACITY OF PLATE GIRDERS.
