ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF RIVETED CONNECTIONS

IN DESIGNING FLOOR-BEAMS FOR STEEL-FRAME STRUCTURES IT IS CUSTOMARY TO NEGLECT THE RESTRAINING EFFECT OF END CONNECTIONS, AND TO ASSUME THAT THE BEAMS ARE HINGED AT THE ENDS. IT IS CUSTOMARY TO TREAT CONNECTIONS AS COMPLETELY FIXED OR RIGID IN MANY OTHER PROBLEMS OF STRESS ANALYSIS IN STEEL FRAMES. IT IS RECOGNIZED THAT THE END CONNECTIONS DO PROVIDE SOME DEGREE OF RESTRAINT ALTHOUGH THERE HAS BEEN NO MEANS OF ALLOWING FOR IT. IT HAS NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED, NUMERICALLY, HOW MUCH RESTRAINT THERE IS. TESTS OF 18 END CONNECTIONS OF THE THREE MOST COMMON TYPES OF STEEL BEAMS FORM THE BASIS OF THIS PAPER. THE AUTHOR SHOWS HOW THIS TEST INFORMATION MAY BE APPLIED TO DESIGN NOT ONLY FOR SINGLE BEAMS, BUT ALSO IN THE INVESTIGATION OF THE STRESSES IN RIVETED FRAMES. TO DATE, LITTLE HAS BEEN PUBLISHED ON THIS SUBJECT AND ONLY A FEW ISOLATED TESTS HAVE BEEN MADE ON RIVETED CONNECTIONS FOR MEASURING THEIR CAPACITY TO RESIST MOMENT. THIS PAPER CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS. THE FIRST PART IS A REPORT ON A SERIES OF TESTS TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ANGULAR CHANGE IN RIVETED BEAM CONNECTIONS AND THE MOMENT INDUCING THESE CHANGES. THE SECOND PART SHOWS THE NECESSARY CHANGES THAT MUST BE MADE IN THE FORMULAS USED IN THE SEVERAL CURRENT METHODS OF ANALYSIS IN ORDER TO ALLOW FOR THE ELASTICITY OF THE RIVETED CONNECTIONS. /ASCE/
