THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF ASPHALT

THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE IS NOT ONLY CONTROLLED BY THE DEGREE OF POLYMERISATION BUT ALSO THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF THE POLYMER. IF THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE FOR POLYMERS IS A FUNCTION OF THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT, IT WAS FELT THAT STUDIES USING GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY TO DETERMINE THE MOLECULAR SIZE DISTRIBUTION WOULD GIVE ADDED INSIGHT INTO THE NATURE OF ASPHALTS. GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY INVOLVES COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHY IN WHICH THE STATIONARY PHASE IS A HETROPOROUS, SOLVENT- SWOLLEN POLYMER NETWORK VARYING IN PERMEABILITY OVER MANY ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE. FIFTY ASPHALT SAMPLES WERE RUN THROUGH A GPC UNIT USING THF AS THE CARRIER SOLVENT AND A COMBINATION OF ANGSTROM COLUMNS. THE RANGE OF GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURES FOR COOLING AND HEATING OF THE DILATOMETER ARE INCLUDED IN A TABLE. IN MOST GROUPS THE RANGE OF GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE IS SUFFICIENT THAT IF THE HIGH VALUE IS USED FOR THE HIGH VISCOSITY GRADE, THE AVERAGE VALUE FOR THE INTERMEDIATE GRADE AND THE LOW VALUE FOR THE LOW VISCOSITY GRADE A REASONABLE RELATION WITH MOLECULAR DISTRIBUTION WOULD EXIST. ANY FURTHER EVALUATION REQUIRES DETERMINATION OF THE VARIABILITY OF THE GEL CHROMATOGRAPH TEST METHOD IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE RELIABILITY OF THE DISTRIBUTIONS CHROMAGRAMS.
