LIVE LOADING FOR LONG-SPAN HIGHWAY BRIDGES

HIGHWAY-BRIDGE LIVE LOADING IS PRESENTED FOR SPANS EXCEEDING FROM 300 TO 400 FT. AND PATTERNED AFTER PRESENT LANE LOADING OF THE STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS OF AASHO. THE LIVE LOADING FOR LONG-SPAN BRIDGES AS DESCRIBED, ACCURATELY REPRESENTS THE SURVEY DATA AND THE ACTUAL VEHICULAR PATTERNS INDICATED IN THE DATA. VARIOUS METHODS TO ACHIEVE BALANCED DESIGN FOR LARGER STRUCTURES HAVE BEEN USED. THIS HAS GENERALLY BEEN ACCOMPLISHED BY ALLOWING GREATER DEAD-LOAD UNIT STRESSES, SO THAT THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF A STRUCTURE CAN FUNCTION MORE EFFICIENTLY IN THEIR STRESS-CARRYING CAPACITY. A FORMULATED LOADING IS PRESENTED FOR USE AS A DESIGN STANDARD FOR SPECIFICATIONS FOR LONG-SPAN HIGHWAY BRIDGES.
