STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROL

THE QUALITY OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE WILL BE DEFINED WHEN THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS ARE UNDER CONTROL: BINDER CONTENT, GRADING, STABILITY, VOIDS AND CONSISTENCY. THE GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION USES LABORATORY DETERMINED VALUES FOR STABILITY AND CONSISTENCY. GRADING, BINDER CONTENT AND VOIDS VALUES ARE DETERMINED FROM PLANT OPERATION. QUALITY CONTROL IS DEFINED BY CONTROLLING (1) INDIVIDUAL SAMPLE VALUE, (2) GROUPED SAMPLES, (3) STANDARD DEVIATION OF GROUPING, AND (4) AMPLITUDE OF OBTAINED RESULTS. DIAGRAMS CONSTRUCTED IN THE GRAPHS ARE: (1) AMPLITUDES OF INDIVIDUAL SAMPLES, AND (2) (2) GRAPH OF GROUPED AMPLITUDES. SINCE THE MAXIMUM STABILITY AND MINIMUM PERCENT VOIDS GENERALLY OCCUR WITH THE SAME BINDER CONTENT, THE MAIN ALTERATIONS WHICH COULD BE MADE AND SOME MEASURES WHICH COULD BE TAKEN IN THE STUDIES OF PROPORTIONS OR IN THE CORRECTIONS TO BE MADE IN THE PLANT, WERE GATHERED IN TWO TABLES. CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH A SERVICE IS CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE ARE EXPLAINED.
