VISCOSITY AND DURABILITY OF ASPHALTS FOR PAVING MIXTURES

THE REPORT IS CONCERNED WITH MEASUREMENTS OF VISCOSITY AND DURABILITY OF ASPHALT CEMENTS USED IN ARIZONA. THE INTEREST IN THESE MEASUREMENTS IS TO RELATE THEIR VALUES TO THE PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALTIC PAVING MIXTURES. VISCOSITY VALUES OBTAINED OVER A RANGE OF TEMPERATURES ARE PRESENTED AND THESE SHOW A WIDE DIVERGENCE FOR ASPHALTS CLASSIFIED AS BEING OF THE SAME GRADE. THE DATA ON ASPHALT DURABILITY WERE OBTAINED BY THE BASIC SHELL OIL COMPANY AGING INDEX PROCEDURE. THE DURABILITY MEASUREMENTS SHOW LARGE DIFFERENCES IN THE RESISTANCE OF AGING BY OXIDATION OF THE ASPHALTS TESTED. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE FACTORS RELATED TO UNDERSTANDING MIXTURE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. /AUTHOR/
