SYNTHETIC RESIN OVERLAY FOR BRIDGE DECK SURFACES-COLUMBIA COUNTY

SYNTHETIC RESINOUS WEARING SURFACES OF ONE-INCH THICKNESS WERE PLACED OVER THE ENTIRE DECKS OF DUAL, I-BEAM BRIDGE STRUCTURES. MIX DESIGN GRADATIONS AND PLANT AND LABORATORY EXTRACTION RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLES. MUCH OF THE COAL TAR SEALER APPLIED IN 1965 ON THESE STRUCTURES REMAINED. THERE WERE RANDOM LENGTHS, TRANSVERSE CRACKS OF VARIED WIDTH AND DEPTH SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE BRIDGE DECK. EXCESS JOINT SEALING COMPOUND WAS REMOVED LEAVING THE JOINTS IN REASONABLY GOOD CONDITION. THE DECKS WERE THEN BROOMED CLEAN OF DIRT AND DEBRIS. PRIME-COATING THE SURFACE A DAY IN ADVANCE WAS RECOMMENDED, BUT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO WITHHOLD TRAFFIC. PLACEMENT DETAILS AND COSTS ARE DESCRIBED. THE MATERIAL WAS QUITE WORKABLE, THE EDGES TURNED OUT WELL, AND SURFACE TEXTURE WAS UNIFORM AND SMOOTH. THE BETTER APPEARING JOB WAS OBTAINED ON DECKS WHICH USED A NEW PAVER. PERIODIC INSPECTION WILL BE MADE TO EVALUATE ITS PERFORMANCE.
