OTTAWA COUNTY'S STEARNS BAYOU BRIDGE

THE FIRST HOT-DIP GALVANIZED STEEL BRIDGE BUILT IN THE UNITED STATES IS DESCRIBED. THE ZINC COATING CAN BE EXPECTED TO PROVIDE SURFACE PROTECTION FOR A MINIMUM OF TWENTY YEARS WITHOUT MAINTENANCE OF ANY KIND. THE NEW STEARNS BAYOU BRIDGE HAS A 30-FOOT CLEAR ROADWAY AND 5-FOOT-WIDE WALKS ON EACH SIDE. THESE WIDE WALKS ARE DESIGNED FOR USE OF THE FISHERMEN. THE BRIDGE HAS EIGHT SPANS, TWO AT SIXTY FEET AND SIX AT FIFTY FEET. THE BEAMS WERE IN LENGTHS OF UP TO SIXTY- FIVE FEET AND WEIGHED UP TO 8 THOUSAND POUNDS. BEAMS FOR THE BRIDGE ARE AMONG THE LARGEST STEEL PRODUCTS EVER GALVANIZED AFTER FABRICATION IN THIS COUNTRY.
