NEWBURGH-HAMPDEN EXPERIMENTAL PAVING PROJECT INTERIM REPORT

PROGRESS IS REPORTED ON AN EXPERIMENTAL PAVING PROJECT LOCATED IN NEWBURGH-HAMPDEN, MAINE. THIS PROJECT CONSISTS OF 13 TEST SECTIONS INVOLVING FOUR TYPES OF MINERAL FILLERS, THREE STANDARD GRADES OF ASPHALT CEMENT, AND ONE TEST SECTION WITH A POLYMER-STYRENE ADDITIVE IN THE ASPHALT. THE PAVEMENT CONSISTS OF 1 1/2 INCHES OF PRIMARY COURSE AND 1 INCH OF EXPERIMENTAL WEARING COURSE WHICH WAS LAID OVER AN EXISTING BITUMINOUS CONCRETE ROAD, THE RESURFACING PROJECT WAS ESTABLISHED IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE RELATIVE PERFORMANCE OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF ASPHALT CEMENT AND FILLERS WITH RESPECT TO MIXING, DURABILITY, AND RESISTANCE TO WEATHERING. THE FIVE PHASES OF THE STUDY CONSIST OF: (1) VISUAL OBSERVATIONS, (2) MIXTURE STUDY RESULTS, (3) ASPHALT PROPERTIES, (4) COMPACTION, AND (5) A SERVICEABILITY INDEX RATING ACCORDING TO THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER. THE CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN BY ASSIGNING WEIGHTED VALUES TO THE VARIOUS PHASES. THE WEIGHTED CORRELATIONS OF THE VARIOUS SECTIONS SHOW THAT: (1) THE 60-70 PENETRATION GRADE ASPHALT APPEARED TO PERFORM POOREST OF THE THREE GRADES, (2) THE 120-150 GRADE ASPHALT APPEARED TO PERFORM THE BEST ALTHOUGH THESE RESULTS ARE NOT AS CONCLUSIVE AS THE 60-70 GRADE, (3) THE 85-100 GRADE PERFORMED NEARLY AS WELL AS THE 120 GRADE EXCEPT FOR THE STANDARD FILLER SECTION, WHILE THE 85-STANDARD PERFORMED VERY POORLY COMPARED WITH THE OTHER SECTION USING THIS GRADE OF ASPHALT, (4) A COMPARISON OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF FILLERS INDICATES THAT THE LIMESTONE AND HYDRATED LIME SECTIONS ARE PERFORMING BEST AND THE STANDARD SAND TYPES PERFORM THE POOREST OF THE SECTIONS, AND (5) STUDY RESULTS INDICATED THAT 60-70 GRADE ASPHALT AND NATURAL SAND TYPE FILLERS GENERALLY PERFORM POORER THAN HOT MIXES CONTAINING SOFTER GRADE ASPHALT AND COMMERCIAL FILLERS.
