A REVIEW OF THE TOXIC PROPERTIES OF SOLVENTS AND MATERIALS USED IN THE TESTING OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS AND IN GENERAL LABORATORY WORK

A REVIEW OF INFORMATION ON THE TOXIC PROPERTIES OF SIXTEEN CHEMICALS, AND SOLVENTS, ENCOUNTERED IN THE TESTING OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS AND MIXTURES HAS BEEN PREPARED. GENERAL PRINCIPLES IN HANDLING THESE MATERIALS, AND IN THE PREVENTION OF POISONING ARE DISCUSSED. DATA RELATED TO THE TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES INCLUDE: THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUES, THRESHOLD OF SMELL, PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS, DETECTION OF PRESENCE OF THE VAPOURS, SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF POISONING, TREATMENT IN EMERGENCIES, AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES. THE CARCINOGENIC PROPERTIES OF TARS AND BITUMENS AND SOLVENTS USED FOR CLEANING LABORATORY APPARATUS AND GLASSWARE ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
