BOW IMPROVEMENT

THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW BOW BRIDGE AND OF THE FLYOVER, WHICH CARRIES ALL TRAFFIC OVER A BUSY EAST LONDON ROAD INTERSECTION. CHOICE OF FORM FOR THE TWO STRUCTURES IS DISCUSSED. FEATURES OF THE CELLULAR COMPOSITE STRUCTURE OF THE BOW BRIDGE ARE PRESENTED, AND ITS DESIGN IS COMPARED WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE RECENTLY PUBLISHED CODE OF PRACTICE (CP117: PART 2). DIFFICULT GROUND CONDITIONS HAVE LED TO THE ADOPTION OF DEEP CYLINDER FOUNDATIONS FOR THE VIADUCT AND OF SEVERAL FORMS OF STRUCTURE FOR THE APPROACHES. DESIGN AND PRESTRESSING OF THE TWIN BOX VIADUCT STRUCTURES ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
