SOME LOAD TESTS ON DRILLED-IN-PLACE CONCRETE CAISSONS

A NUMBER OF LOAD TESTS CARRIED OUT ON DRILLED CAST-IN- PLACE CONCRETE CAISSONS ARE DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH SOME PERTINENT GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF THE GLACIAL TILL OVERBURDEN AND SHALE BEDROCK. BOTH THE TILL AND THE SHALE DETERIORATED RAPIDLY UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE BY EXCAVATION AND ACTION OF GROUNDWATER SEEPAGE. THE UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROJECT WERE THAT STRAIGHT SHAFT CAISSONS WERE USED IN SUCH CONDITIONS, THAT THEY WERE DESIGNED FOR SIDE SHEAR ONLY. /AUTHOR/
