SURVEY OF USE OF CRUSHED AGGREGATES IN HOT-MIX ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

HOT-MIX ASPHALT PAVEMENTS WITH CRUSHED AGGREGATES HAVE BEEN THE STANDARD OF QUALITY FOR ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES DURING THIS CENTURY. THIS IS EVIDENT FROM THE THE LITERATURE COVERING THIS PERIOD. THE CRUSHING OF BOTH THE COARSE AGGREGATE AND THE FINE AGGREGATE LEAD TO HIGHER STABILITY AND BETTER PERFORMANCE OF HOT-MIX ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. THE INFLUENCE OF THE FINE AGGREGATES IS DECISIVE IN DENSE-GRADED MIXTURES. A WIDE VARIETY OF CRUSHED MATERIALS, BOTH COARSE AND FINE, IN VARIOUS COMBINATIONS AND GRADATIONS HAVE BEEN USED SUCESSFULLY IN THE PRODUCTION OF HOT-MIX ASPHALT BASE, BINDER AND SURFACE COURSES. NON-POLISHING CRUSHED AGGREGATES, PROPERLY USED, PROVIDE EXCELLENT NON-SKID TEXTURE IN HOT-MIX ASPHALT SURFACE COURSES. THE PROFESSION HAS COMPLETED SATISFACTORY PROCEDURES FOR THE DESIGN, MIXING, PLACING COMPACTION AND CONTROL OF HOT-MIX ASPHALT PAVEMENTS UTILIZING CRUSHED AGGREGATES BUT INCREASES IN EQUIPMENT CAPACITY ARE NEEDED FOR THICK LIFT CONSTRUCTION. IN THE WASHO AND AASHO ROAD TESTS THE HOT-MIX ASPHALT PAVEMENT LAYERS PRODUCED WITH CRUSHED COARSE AGGREGATES WERE SUPERIOR TO THE CRUSHED AGGREGATE BASE COURSES WITH WHICH THEY WERE COMPARD. /AUTHOR/
