LABORATORY EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANTS FOR BITUMEN

THE ADDITION OF ANTIOXIDANTS TO BITUMEN HAS BEEN STUDIED AS A MEANS OF IMPROVING ITS DURABILITY. A PARTLY BLOWN KUWAIT BITUMEN HAS BEEN MODIFIED WITH A WIDE RANGE OF ANTIOXIDANTS AND EACH MIX SUBJECTED TO SCREENING TESTS. THIN FILMS WERE EXPOSED SEPARATELY TO OXYGEN UNDER PRESSURE IN THE DARK AND TO SOLAR RADIATION, AND THE CHANGES MEASURED BY BOTH INFRARED SPECTROMETRIC AND MICROVISCOMETER TECHNIQUES. THE INFLUENCE OF CONCENTRATION OF SEVERAL ANTIOXIDANTS AND THE EFFECTS OF COMBINING DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANTIOXIDANTS WERE ALSO EXAMINED. WHILE HIGHLY EFFICIENT SYSTEMS HAVE NOT BEEN DISCOVERED, THE RESULTS OFFER CONSIDERABLE PROMISE AND HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF OPTIMUM SELECTION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACCORDING TO APPLICATION. /AUTHOR/
