THE SECTION DEALING WITH BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR PARTS: (1) THE DURABILITY OF FLEXIBLE SURFACINGS. A SPECIAL STUDY WAS MADE OF THE CAUSES OF DURABILITY FAILURE. THESE CAUSES ARE CLASSIFIED INTO CAUSES ARISING FROM BAD DESIGN, CAUSES ARISING FROM CONTRACT SPECIFICATIONS, CAUSES ARISING FROM BAD WORKMANSHIP OR INSUFFICIENT OR DEFECTIVE CONTROLS. (2) SPECIAL SURFACINGS. THIS PART COMPRISES (A) SURFACINGS WHICH ARE SPECIAL BECAUSE OF THEIR MIX-DESIGN, E.G. MASTICASPHALT THE CHARACTERISTICS, MANUFACTURE AND APPLICATION OF WHICH ARE DESCRIBED, (B) SURFACINGS LAID AT SPECIAL LOCATIONS: BRIDGES, PARKING AREAS, ALONG TRAMWAY TRACKS, BUS STOPS, AND (C) PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE HEATING OF SURFACINGS.
