REPORT ON THE LAYING AND RESULTS OF INSPECTION OF A ROAD EXPERIMENT TO ASSESS TWO EXPERIMENTAL TAR PRIMES ON PROVINCIAL ROAD 48, NEAR HAMMANSKRAAL MARCH, 1968

TWO EXPERIMENTAL HIGH-TEMPERATURE TAR PRIMERS ARE EVALUATED BY MEANS OF A ROAD EXPERIMENT. THE FIRST PRIME BULGARIA IS DISCUSSED. THE TRAFFIC COUNT CARRIED OUT IN THIS WAY IS USED TO DETERMINE THE VOLUME AND SPEED OF THE TRAFFIC PROPORTION OF OILS WHICH DISTILL OFF IN THE RANGE 200-270 DEGREES C THAN THAT SPECIFIED IN S.A.B.S. 748. RESULTS SHOW THAT BOTH PRIMERS PERFORMED SIMILARLY TO NORMAL HIGH-TEMPERATURE TAR PRIMERS WITH REGARD TO PENETRATION, IMPERMEABILITY AND STRENGTHENING THE BASE TO RESIST DISINTEGRATION UNDER TRAFFIC. HOWEVER, IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE DRYING RATES OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PRIMERS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THOSE OF NORMAL PRIMERS. IT WAS THEREFORE CONCLUDED THAT THE USE OF THESE PRIMERS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION WOULD HAVE TO BE CONFINED TO CASES WHERE A LONGER DRYING TIME COULD BE TOLERATED. /RRL/
