STUDY OF THE IMPERVIOUSNESS OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE /IN BULGARIAN/

THE ECONOMIC AID COUNCIL FOR SOCIALIST COUNTRIES HAS UNDERTAKEN TO STANDARDIZE PRODUCTION AND TEST METHODS FOR MATERIALS USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. BULGARIA WAS MADE RESPONSIBLE, IN COLLABRATION WITH THE USSR, FOR THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE IMPERVIOUSNESS OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A SERIES OF LABORATORY TESTS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER UNDER VARYING CONDITIONS. TEST RESULTS LED TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) CURRENT STANDARD METHODS USED IN BULGARIA ARE FAR FROM SATISFACTORY, (2) THE EFFECT OF WATER ON ASPHALTIC CONCRETE CAN BE BEST STUDIED IF THE LATTER IS SATURATED IN A VACUUM AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 30 AND 35 DEGREES C, (3) THE DURIEZ METHOD GIVES SATISFACTORY RESTULTS, (4) THE METHOD OF TOTAL IMMERSION OF THE SAMPLES GIVES GOOD RESULTS WITH REGARD TO THE EFFECT OF WATER ON ASPHALTIC CONCRETE BUT TAKES A LONG TIME; IT CAN BE USED IN RESEARCH STUDIES, (5) FOR ROUTINE TESTS, THE BEST METHOD APPEARS TO BE THAT IN WHICH SAMPLES ARE TREATED IN A VACUUM AND THEN SUBJECTED TO FIFTEEN DAYS OF TOTAL IMMERSION. /LCPC/RRL/
