FOOTING DESIGN FOR WIND-RESISTANT HIGHWAY SIGN BOARDS

DRILLED SHAFT REINFORCED CONCRETE FOOTINGS FOR THE SUPPORT OF LARGE HIGHWAY SIGNBOARDS CAN BE DESIGNED TO ENABLE THEM TO RESIST MAJOR WIND LOADS. THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED BY AN ASSUMPTION OF THE SOIL PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION ALONG THE EMBEDDED LENGTH OF THE FOOTING RESISTING AN OVERTURNING MOMENT DUE TO WIND. THE RELIABILITY OF THIS ASSUMPTION HAS BEEN VERIFIED BY CONSIDERABLE RESEARCH. THE CONCEPT OF PASSIVE SOIL PRESSURE, ALSO USED IN THE SOLUTION, IS A RECOGNIZED DESIGN PROCEDURE IN THE FIELD OF SOIL MECHANICS. /AUTHOR/
