CONSIDERATION OF A GENERAL FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATION FOR ROAD BITUMENS ON THE BASIS OF PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS UNDER CRITICAL CIRCUMSTANCES

IN THE LAST TEN TO FIFTEEN YEARS RESEARCH HAS AFFORDED A BETTER INSIGHT INTO THE FACTORS GOVERNING THE PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALTIC MIXES USED FOR ROAD WORK. IN CONSEQUENCE THERE ARE MUCH IMPROVED PROSPECTS OF SETTING UP INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED CRITERIA FOR THE PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF ROAD BITUMENS ON THE BASIS OF THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND THE CHANGES IN THESE PROPERTIES DURING APPLICATION AND SERVICE. SUCH CHANGES WILL ARISE AS A RESULT OF TRAFFIC AND UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AIR, LIGHT AND WATER. THE FUNCTION OF BITUMEN SPECIFICATIONS IS DISCUSSED AND THE PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS TO BE MET BY ROAD BITUMENS HAVE BEEN ANALYSED AND EXPRESSED IN FUNDAMENTAL TERMS. THE ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DRAWING UP RATIONAL SPECIFICATIONS ARE DEVELOPED AND SUITABLE FORMS FOR THEIR EXPRESSION ARE DISCUSSED. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO RECENT TRENDS IN SPECIFICATIONS AND SOME DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF SPECIFIC INVESTIGATIONS INTO CERTAIN ASPECTS OF DURABILITY AND THERMAL FRACTURE. /RRL/A/
