LARGE DEFLECTION BEHAVIOR OF TRANSVERSELY LOADED RECTANGULAR ORTHOTROPIC PLATES

A SOLUTION IS GIVEN FOR THE LARGE DEFLECTION BEHAVIOR OF RECTANGULAR ORTHOTROPIC /INCLUDING ISOTROPIC/ PLATES UNDER ANY SYMMETRICAL SYSTEM OF TRANSVERSE LOADING, AND HAVING ELASTIC FLEXURAL, EXTENSIONAL AND SHEARING EDGE RESTRAINTS. THESE SOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED BY THE FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD USING THE ATLAS COMPUTER. CLOSE AGREEMENT IS FOUND WITH THE FEW EXISTING LARGE DEFLECTION SOLUTIONS FOR SIMPLE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. REPRESENTATIVE NON-DIMENSIONAL SOLUTIONS ARE GIVEN TO SHOW THE EFFECT OF MEMBRANE ACTION AND OF THE EDGE RESTRAINTS. AN EXPERIMENT ON A CORRUGATED PLATE CONFIRMS THE APPLICABILITY OF THE THEORY IN THIS CASE AND DEMONSTRATES THE IMPORTANCE OF MEMBRANE ACTION. /AUTHOR/
