BEHAVIOR OF SHEAR KEYS AND ORDINARY CONCRETE SURFACE UNDER FATIGUE AND STATIC OVERLOADING

A STANDARD, FULL-SIZED I-SHAPED BRIDGE GIRDER, WITH CAST- IN-PLACE COMPOSITE DECK, WAS BUILT WITH HALF OF THE GIRDER TOP SURFACE CONTAINING STIRRUPS AND SHEAR KEYS AND THE OTHER HALF CONTAINING ONLY SHEAR STIRRUPS. STATIC TESTS, DYNAMIC TESTS, AND A FINAL TEST TO FAILURE REVEALED SIGNIFICANT DATA ON THE RELATIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE TWO TYPES OF SHEAR CONNECTION.
