HIGHWAY ASPHALTS FROM USSR PETROLEUM REFINERIES, AND RECENT REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH FOR THEIR QUALITY /IN RUSSIAN/

THE REQUIREMENTS WERE SPECIFIED IN THE PROJECTED NEW STANDARDS FROM BITUMENS, WHICH WERE DESIGNATED BY 5 GRADES, BND-0, I, II, III, AND IV. IN CONNECTION WITH PLANNING THE NEW STANDARD, SAMPLES OF BITUMEN MARKS BN-II AND BN-III, FROM DIFFERENT FACTORIES WERE ANALYZED, AND THE RESULTS WERE GIVEN, TOGETHER WITH THE METHOD OF PREPARATION OF THE SAMPLES, AND THE RAW MATERIAL USED. THE BITUMENS FELL INTO 3 GROUPS, CHARACTERIZED BY GOOD HEAT AND FROST STABILITY, AND LOW STRENGTH; HIGH STRENGTH AND AND ADHESION, BUT LOW HEAT AND FROST STABILITY, A SMALL THIRD GROUP, COMBINING THE ADVANTAGES OF THE OTHER 2 GROUPS, REPRESENTED BY BITUMEN PREPARED BY OXIDATION OF 50% RESIDUE OF YAREGSK PETROLEUM. THE GENERAL DEFECT OF ROAD BITUMENS OF U.S.S.R. FACTORIES WAS POOR ADHESION TO MARBLE GRAINS, WHICH WAS BEST REMEDIED BY THE ADDITION OF A SURFACE-ACTIVE AGENT. /LCPC/RRL/
