APPLICATION OF ACTIVATION ANALYSIS TO ASPHALTS

NUCLEAR ACTIVATION ANALYSIS, THE DETERMINATION OF ELEMENTAL COMPOUNDS BY A STUDY OF THE DECAY CHARACTERISTICS OF RADIOACTIVE PRODUCTS, HAS BEEN APPLIED RATHER EXTENSIVELY TO CERTAIN PETROLEUM FRACTIONS. THE NEW ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUE HOWEVER, HAS NOT BEEN WIDELY USED IN ASPHALT TECHNOLOGY. THE ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUE USED AND RECENT RESULTS OBTAINED BY USING 14 MEV. NEUTRON ACTIVATION OF 0 DETERMENATION IS DESCRIBED. MEASUREMENTS ON 13 DIFFERENT ROAD BUILDING ASPHALTS SHOW THAT (1) BITUMENS FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES AND METHODS OF PROCESSING VARY CONSIDERABLE IN 0 CONTENT (2) DURING THE SERVICE LIFE OF A BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT, 0 INCREASES DURING THE 1ST FEW MONTHS AND AFTERWARDS REMAINS FAIRLY CONSTANT ALTHOUGH THE ASPHALT CONTINUES TO HARDEN, AND (3) HEATING THIN FILMS OF ASPHALT IN AN AIR OVEN RESULTS IN INCREASED 0 CONTENT. THE ADDITION OF 0 WITH TIME IS NOT ENOUGH TO ACCOUNT FOR HARDENING OF THE ASPHALT WHICH TAKES PLACE. SOME PRELIMINARY THERMAL NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR TRACE METALS IN A FEW OF THE ASPHALTS USED IN THIS INVESTIGATION. INFORMATION CONCERNING THE TRANSFER OF ELEMENTS BETWEEN THE ASPHALT AND STONE IN THE PAVEMENT MAY HELP IN EXPLAINING CHANGES WHICH OCCUR IN THE BITUMEN DURING SERVICE. /A/LCPC/
