THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF HIGHWAY SKEW SLAB- BRIDGES

FINITE DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS FOR A SYSTEM OF OBLIQUE COORDINATES WERE DEVELOPED TO ANALYSE STRESSES IN SKEWED PLATES BY COMPUTERS. THE ANALYSIS IS SUITABLE FOR ANY SKEW ANGLE AND ANY RATIO OF LENGTH TO WIDTH. LABORATORY PHOTO- STRESS STUDIES OF THREE SCALE MODELS WERE CARRIED OUT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MATHEMATICAL STUDY. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT QUALITATIVELY, THE ANALYSIS REPRODUCES THE GENERAL BEHAVIOR OF SKEWED PLATES. THE AUTHORS ARE CONTINUING THE RESEARCH TO INVESTIGATE THE CASE OF A PLATE HAVING A RIGID BEAM ALONG ITS FREE EDGE CORRESPONDING TO A BRIDGE HAVING CURBS. /CGRA/
