ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS IN URBAN STREETS IN HAMBURG /IN GERMAN/

THE FOLLOWING ARE CONSIDERED: (1) THE INTERMEDIATE COURSES OF ASPHALTIC BITUMEN OR COARSE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, (2) SURFACINGS OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE BOTH RICH AND POOR IN CHIPPINGS. ONLY FRONTAGE CARRIAGEWAYS AND LOW-COST ROADS CARRYING LITTLE TRAFFIC ARE BUILT WITH SINGLE-LAYER ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS POOR IN CHIPPINGS. SURFACINGS MADE OF MIXTURES RICH IN MORTAR ARE PREFERRED, AND MORE ATTENTION IS PAID TO BINDER, FILLER AND SAND THAN BEFORE, (3) LIGHT-COLORED ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS: ONLY SYNTHETIC OR NATURAL LIGHT AGGREGATES ARE ADDED TO THE MIXTURE AS BRIGHTENING MATERIALS EFFECT OF WHICH IS CAUSED BY WEATHERING; AND (4) PLACEMENT OF THE SURFACING BY HAND AND WITH FINISHES. RUBBER-TIRED ROLLERS HAVE PROVED PARTICULARLY GOOD FOR COMPACTION. BY MEANS OF INFRARED RADIATION APPARATUS, WHICH CAN BE MOUNTED LATERALLY AT THE FRONT OF ALL TYPES OF SURFACE FINISHERS, THE JOINTS OF MULTILANED SURFACINGS CAN BE REHEATED TO THE PLACEMENT TEMPERATURE, AND THEN SMOOTHED OVER. /FG/RRL/
