ICE RECORDER TESTS BRIDGE DESIGN

AN ICE PRESSURE RECORDER, DESIGNED BY THE BRIDGE BRANCH OF THE ALBERTA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS MAY BE THE KEY TO SAVING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON THE COST OF BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION IN MANY COUNTRIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE ICE RECORDER, INSTALLED ON A NEW 1,100 FT. BRIDGE OVER THE ATHABASCA RIVER AT HONDO, 100 MILES NORTH OF EDMONTON ON HIGHWAY NO. 2, WILL MEASURE ICE PRESSURES DURING THE SPRING FLOW. THE DESIGNERS HOPE TO DETERMINE IF NATIONAL DESIGN CODES OF 29 TONS OF FORCE PER SQ. FT. ON BRIDGE PIERS ARE, IN FACT, REASONABLE. /CGRA/
