A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE WATER-SOLUBILITY OF THE PRODUCTS OF PHOTO-OXIDATION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS

THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE INITIAL STAGES IN A PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH TO STUDY THE OXIDATION OF THIN FILMS OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE AMOUNT OF WATER- SOLUBLE PRODUCTS FORMED BY THE OXIDATION AND THE CHANGES OCCURING IN THE SURFACE TEXTURE OF THE FILMS. AN EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE WAS DEVELOPED BY WHICH A NUMBER OF THIN FILMS OF BINDER COULD BE EXPOSED SIMULTANEOUSLY TO A PHOTO-OXIDATION PROCESS. WASHING THE FILM AT INTERVALS AFTER EXPOSURE TO OXIDATION ENABLED THE AMOUNTS OF WATER-SOLUBLE PRODUCTS TO BE MEASURED. PHOTOGRAPHIC METHODS WERE USED TO STUDY THE CHANGES IN SURFACE TEXTURE. TEN DIFFERENT BINDERS WERE STUDIED IN THIS INVESTIGATION INCLUDING TRINIDAD LAKE ASPHALT, PETROLEUM BITUMENS FROM MIDDLE EAST AND VENEZUELAN SOURCES, AND PITCH-BITUMEN. THIS PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT WATER-SOLUBLE DEGRADATION PRODUCTS OF OXIDATION WERE FORMED BY ALL THE BINDERS, THE AMOUNTS VARYING WITH THE TYPE AND VISCOSITY OF BINDER. IN GENERAL THE MIDDLE EAST BITUMEN PRODUCED THE MOST WATER-SOLUBLE MATERIAL FOLLOWED BY THE TRINIDAD LAKE ASPHALT AND THE VENEZUELAN BITUMEN. THE SOFTER BINDERS PRODUCED MORE WATER-SOLUBLE MATERIAL THAN THE HARDER BINDERS. ALL THE BINDERS EXHIBITED CHANGES IN SURFACE TEXTURE. FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ARE REQUIRED TO CONFIRM THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THIS PRELIMINARY STUDY, TO DETERMINE THE NATURE OF THE WATER-SOLUBLE MATERIALS, AND TO RELATE, IF POSSIBLE, THE WATER-SOLUBLE MATERIALS AND CHANGES IN SURFACE TEXTURE OF THE FILMS WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BINDERS IN DENSE SURFACINGS. /RRL/A/
