FATIGUE OF BITUMINOUS ROAD MIXES

THIS PAPER, WHICH WAS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE ON FLOW, FATIGUE AND FAILURE OF THE BRITISH SOCIETY OF RHEOLOGY, 1959, DISCUSSES AN INVESTIGATION ON THE FATIGUE OF BITUMEN- AGGREGATE MIXES UNDER SINUSOIDAL LOADING. MOST OF THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A MIXTURE WITH SAND AS THE COARSEST AGGREGATE, AND A BITUMEN CONTENT GIVING ABOUT 3 PERCENT AIR VOIDS IN THE FINISHED MIX. THE TYPES OF LOADING APPLIED WERE BENDING DEFORMATION AT (A) CONSTANT STRESS AMPLITUDE, AND TORSIONAL DEFORMATION AT CONSTANT STRAIN AMPLITUDE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT: (1) BITUMINOUS MIXES EXHIBIT FATIGUE PHENOMENA WHEN SUBJECTED TO BENDING AND TORSIONAL OSCILLATING LOADS, (2) THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF AN ENDURANCE LIMIT IN THE RANGE INVESTIGATED, (3) THE SURFACE CONDITION HAS LITTLE EFFECT, BUT INCREASED VOID CONTENT CAN REDUCE THE LIFE CONSIDERABLY, (4) TENSILE MEAN STRESS REDUCES LIFE CONSIDERABLY, (5) UNDER ALTERNATING BENDING STRESS OF CONSTANT AMPLITUDE, BITUMINOUS MIXES HAVE A LONGER LIFE AT LOW TEMPERATURES, (6) THE FATIGUE LIFE DEPENDS TO SOME EXTENT ON THE SPEED OF LOADING -- THE LOWER THE SPEED THE SHORTER THE LIFE, (7) THERE IS A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LOGARITHM OF THE STRESS AND THAT OF THE NUMBER OF CYCLES TO FAILURE OVER THE RANGE OF 10,000 TO 100,000,000 CYCLES FOR A CONSTANT TEMPERATURE AND SPEED OF LOADING, (8) IT APPEARS THAT STRAIN IS THE DOMINANT FACTOR AFFECTING THE FATIGUE LIFE OF A PARTICULAR BITUMEN-AGGREGATE MIXTURE. THE RESULTS OF FATIGUE TESTS AT CONSTANT TORSIONAL STRAIN SUPPORT THIS CONCLUSION.
