THEORETICAL ASPECT OF THE RELATION OF BITUMEN OF SOLID MATTER

THE RELATION OF ASPHALTIC BITUMEN TO MINERAL MATTER IS PRINCIPALLY A WETTING AND ADHESIVE PROBLEM. IN CONNECTION HEREWITH THREE PROBLEMS ARE DISCUSSED: (1) THE RELATION OF LIQUIDS TO SOLIDS (WETTING PROBLEM), (2) THE RELATION OF SEMI-SOLIDS TO SOLIDS (ADHESION PROBLEM), AND (3) THE FACTORS WHICH CAUSE THE TRANSITION OF THE LIQUID TO THE SEMI-LIQUID STATE OF ASPHALTIC BITUMEN. IN CONNECTION WITH THE FIRST TWO MENTIONED PROBLEMS, THE DETERMINATION OF THE INTERFACIAL TENSION SOLID-GAS AND THE COMPLETE SURFACE TENSION-TEMPERATURE CURVE OF ASPHALTIC BITUMEN IS NECESSARY. THE WORK DONE IN THIS FIELD IS DISCUSSED, ESPECIALLY IN CONNECTION WITH THE APPLICATION OF ANTONOW'S LAW FOR LIQUID- LIQUID ON LIQUID-SOLID SYSTEMS. FOR THE THIRD PROBLEM THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TRANSITION POINT IN SURFACE TENSION- TEMPERATURE CURVE AND RECENT X-RAY RESEARCHERS ON ASPHALTENES ARE DISCUSSED. ASPHALTENES, PRECIPATED FROM MEXICAN ASPHALTIC BITUMEN, HAD BEEN EXTRACTED DURING ONE YEAR WITH ETHER. BY THIS LONG-CONTINUED EXTRACTION THE ASPHALTENES HAD BECOME PARTLY INSOLUBLE IN CARBON TETRACHLORIDE AND CARBON DISULFIDE. THE PRINCIPAL LINES OF GRAPHITE CORRESPOND WITH THE LINES OF THE ASPHALTENES IN THE RONTGENOGRAMS. SO IT IS HIGHLY PROBABLE THAT IN THESE ASPHALTENES, MICRO-CRYSTALLINE GRAPHITE IS PRESENT.
