CALIBRATION STUDY SHOULD ELIMINATE VARIATIONS IN SKID-TESTING TRAILERS

THE SAFETY SYSTEMS LABORATORY (SSL) OF THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION HAS CONDUCTED RESEARCH FOR FHWA TO DEVELOP CALIBRATION EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES FOR ASTM E274-70 SKID TRAILERS, FOR THE PURPOSE OF PRODUCING A NATIONAL REFERENCE STANDARD. IN JUNE 1971 SSL, IN CONJUNCTION WITH PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY (PSU), WHICH IS STUDYING THE CAUSES IN SKID NUMBER VARIABILITY, SPONSORED A CALIBRATION AND CORRELATION STUDY IN WHICH THE PARTICIPANTS, EACH OF WHICH SUPPLIED ITS OWN TRAILER, WERE THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS OF MARYLAND, DELAWARE, AND PENNSYLVANIA; SSL; STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY; AND PUS. THE PSU AND PENNSYLVANIA TRAILERS WERE ONE-WHEELED SYSTEMS; THE REST, TWO-WHEELED. THE CALIBRATION PROCEDURE AND THE TEST PROCEDURE ARE DESCRIBED. THREE OF THE TWO-WHEELED TRAILERS AGREED TO WITHIN TWO SN; THE DELAWARE TRAILER HAD TOO MUCH SCATTER AT THE NOZZLE, BUT THIS WAS OFFSET BY DELAWARE'S EXCESSIVE CALIBRATION. THE TWO ONE-WHEELED TRAILERS PRODUCED SN'S THAT VARIED BY ABOUT 10; THE CAUSES OF THIS VARIATION DID NOT FALL WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION. THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF TIME OF DAY, TRAILER DESIGN, AND PAVEMENT TEXTURE ARE DISCUSSED BRIEFLY.
