A LOOK AT OPEN MIXES TO IMPROVE SKID RESISTANCE

A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED BY THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS TO EVALUATE SKID RESISTANCE AND RIDEABILITY OF A VARIETY OF OPEN MIX SURFACES. THE TYPES OF MIXTURES USED WERE HOT MIXES, SAND ASPHALTS, PLANT MIX SEALS, AND SLURRY SEALS. UNDER HEAVY TRAFFIC, OPEN MIXES ARE MORE DESIRABLE TO INSURE PROPER SKID RESISTANCE. WHEN SKID QUALITIES, SMOOTHNESS AND APPEARANCE ARE CONSIDERED, THE PLANT MIX SEALS SHOW THE MOST PROMISE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GRAVEL WITH 75 PERCENT CRUSHED FACES. UNDER LIGHT TRAFFIC, ALL SURFACES ARE PERFORMING SATISFACTORILY EXCEPT LOUISIANA SAND ASPHALT. /AUTHOR/
