BITUMINOUS SURFACE TREATMENT OF RURAL HIGHWAYS

THE QUANTITY OF THE BINDER IS RELATED TO THE VOLUME OF THE VOIDS BETWEEN THE COMPACTED AGGREGATE. THE ASPHALT MUST NOT FILL ALL OF THE VOIDS SINCE A SLICK SURFACE WILL RESULT. THE ASPHALT SHOULD FILL THE VOIDS IN THE AGGREGATE TO ONE-HALF TO TWO-THIRDS OF THE COMPACTED HEIGHT OF THE AGGREGATE. ONE SIZE AGGREGATE IS RECOMMENDED AND SINCE THE FINAL LAYER IS ONLY ONE STONE THICK, THE VOLUME OF AGGREGATE NEEDED SHOULD BE THE AMOUNT TO COVER THE SURFACE WITH ONE LAYER OF THE STONE PLUS TEN PERCENT FOR CONSTRUCTION ALLOWANCES. /AUTHOR/
