FLEXIBILITY AND FATIGUE TESTING OF BITUMINOUS MIXES

THREE-POINT LOADING DYNAMIC TEST ON BEAM SAMPLES OF BITUMINOUS MIXES CONDUCTED IN GERMANY AND SOUTH AFRICA INDICATED SOME POTENTIAL SOURCES OF ERROR. IT WAS THEREFORE DECIDED TO DESIGN NEW EQUIPMENT. A NEW FORCE GENERATOR WAS INSTALLED CAPABLE OF PRODUCING FORCES SIX TIMES AS LARGE AS THOSE PRODUCED BY THE PREVIOUS GENERATOR. THE ARRANGEMENT IS SUCH THAT COMPRESSIONAL AS WELL AS FLEXURAL TESTS CAN BE CARRIED OUT ON THE SPECIMENS WITH A MINIMUM OF ADDITIONAL APPARATUS AND COST. ALL SPECIMENS ARE MOUNTED VERTICALLY TO REDUCE THE EFFECT OF GRAVITY AND THE TENDENCY TO FLOW. TWO- POINT LOADING WAS CHOSEN BECAUSE IT REDUCES THE POSSIBLE NUMBER OF CONTACT RESONANCES AND SIMPLIFIES THE METHOD OF SUPPORT. THE RIGIDITY OF THE APPARATUS AND TEMPERATURE CONTROL WERE ALSO IMPROVED.
