ON MINERAL FILLERS IN ASPHALT SURFACING

A STUDY IS REPORTED WHICH WAS CONCERNED WITH THE MINERAL COMPOSITION, DEGREE OF COARSENESS, AMOUNT AND SURFACE-ACTIVE PROPERTIES OF FILLERS UTILIZED IN FINLAND, ALONG WITH THE EXAMINATION OF THE MATERIAL SEPARATED BY MEANS OF CYCLONES. THE PROPERTIES OF FILLER WERE STUDIED BY INVESTIGATION OF THE INFLUENCE IT EXERCISES UPON THE QUALITY OF SURFACING. THE FILLERS STUDIED WERE QUARTZ, FELDSPAR, HORNBLENDE, TALC, LIMESTONE AND TO SOME EXTENT MICA FILLERS. WHEN THESE FILLERS WERE USED, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE INFLUENCE THEY EXERTED UPON THE PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURE WAS DIFFERENT. THE BEST DENSITY WAS PRODUCED BY TALC FILLER. THE MARSHALL VALUES WERE ALSO GOOD. AS OPPOSED TO THIS, WHEN HORNBLENDE AND FELDSPAR FILLERS USED, THE CORRESPONDING VALUES WERE SOMEWHAT INFERIOR TO THOSE FOR THE OTHER FILLERS. ALL OF THE MINERAL FILLERS MENTIONED ARE SUITABLE FOR USE AS FILLERS WHEN THEY ARE SUFFICIENTLY FINE-GRAINED. THE AMOUNT OF FILLER DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF BINDER, AND VICE VERSA. IN SOME CASES, DIMINUTION IN THE AMOUNT OF LIMESTONE FILLER MAY LEAD TO A 2% INCREASE IN VOID CONTENT. IT IS OPEN TO QUESTION WHETHER IT IS WORTHWHILE TO USE ADHESION AGENTS TOGETHER WITH BASIC FILLERS, ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE USE OF AMINO TYPE ADHESION AGENTS ALONG WITH ACID MINERAL POWDERS IMPROVES ADHESION BETWEEN THE BINDER AND THE MINERAL AGGREGATE, THUS IMPROVING THE PROPERTIES OF SURFACING.
