COULD FATIGUE BE A PROBLEM IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS?

UNDER TRAFFIC LOADING THE LAYERS OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE ARE SUBJECTED TO A CONTINUOUS FLEXING AND THEREFORE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS THE POSSIBILITY OF FATIGUE DAMAGE TO THE ROAD STRUCTURE WILL EXIST. ALTHOUGH THERE REMAINS VERY LARGE GAPS IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXES A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF EXPERIMENTAL WORK ON BRITISH ROAD MIXES HAS BEEN CONDUCTED DURING THE LAST FOUR YEARS. DETAILS OF SOME OF THE MIXES INVESTIGATED AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE PRESENTED, TOGETHER WITH A DISCUSSION OF THESE RESULTS IN RELATION TO POSSIBLE PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE. /AUTHOR/
