EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON ASPHALTIC CONCRETE AT THE TIME OF MIXING. FINAL REPORT

AN EXTENSIVE LABORATORY STUDY OF VISCOSITY CHARACTERISTICS OVER A WIDE RANGE OF TEMPERATURES WAS PERFORMED ON FOUR 85-100 PENETRATION GRADE ASPHALT CEMENTS AND A SIMILAR INVESTIGATION WAS MADE OF THE VISCOSITY CHARACTERISTICS OF ASPHALT CEMENT EXTRACTED FROM PAVING MIXTURES PRODUCED AND PLACED AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES. THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS MIXING AND PLACEMENT TEMPERATURES ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF SAMPLES PREPARED FROM EACH OF THE FOUR 85-100 GRADE ASPHALT CEMENTS IN COMBINATION WITH EACH OF THREE AGGREGATE TYPES WAS STUDIED UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS. IN ADDITION, A SERIES OF TESTS WERE PERFORMED USING ONE ASPHALT CEMENT AND ONE AGGREGATE AT THE VARIOUS MIXING AND COMPACTION VISCOSITIES BUT WITH THE COMPACTION MOLD TEMPERATURE REDUCED TO 32 DEGREES F AT THE START OF COMPACTION. THE THIRD PHASE OF STUDY WAS TO EVALUATE THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS MIXING AND COMPACTION VISCOSITY VALUES ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURES WHEN PREPARED AND PLACED BY ROUTINE CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES. VARIOUS PLANT TEMPERATURES WERE USED TO PROVIDE A RANGE OF MIXING VISCOSITIES AND THE VISCOSITY OF THE MIXTURE AT THE TIME OF PLACEMENT WAS DETERMINED BY TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS AT THE PAVER. THE RATE OF TEMPERATURE CHANGE AT VARIOUS POINTS WITHIN THE COMPACTED MIXTURE WAS ESTABLISHED. /AUTHOR/
