THE EVENNESS OF CARRIAGEWAYS /IN FRENCH/

A METHOD IS DESCRIBED WHICH FACILITATES THE MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENNESS OF A CARRIAGEWAY AS A FUNCTION OF THE TYPE OF DEFECT OBSERVED (LOCALIZED, RANDOM, PERIODICAL). DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF VARIOUS TYPES OF APPARATUS FOR EVALUATING EVENNESS, AND A COMPARISON IS MADE OF THEIR RANGE OF OPERATION IN RELATION TO THE MOST DANGEROUS FREQUENCIES FOR CARS (THE FREQUENCIES CORRESPOND TO A WAVE LENGTH BETWEEN 0.5 M AND 50 M). THE INFLUENCE OF EVENNESS ON THE COMFORT AND SAFETY OF VEHICLES IN RELATION TO THEIR SPEED IS STUDIED. A SAMPLE OF EVENNESS VALUES OBTAINED ON A NUMBER OF ROADS IN FRANCE IS GIVEN AND USED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF VEHICLE VIBRATIONS. THE POSSIBILITY OF IMPROVING THE EVENNESS OF CARRIAGEWAYS BY USING DIFFERENT TYPES OF LAYING MACHINES IS DISCUSSED. /LCPC(A)/
