AN EVALUATION OF THE COMPACTION EFFECT OF A SINGLE DRUM VIBRATORY ROLLER ON ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXES

THE EVALUATION OF THE SINGLE DRUM VIBRATORY ROLLER AS A POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT FOR CONVENTIONAL COMPACTION EQUIPMENT CONSISTED OF CORRELATION STUDIES ON THE COMPACTION EFFORT OF THE VIBRATORY AGAINST THAT OF CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT. THE EVALUATION PROGRAM WAS CARRIIED OUT ON THREE CONTRACTS, EACH OF WHICH USED A DIFFERENT ASPHALT BINDER. IN ALL CASES, THE AGGREGATE USED ON THE PROJECT WAS CRUSHED ON SITE TO THE SPECIFICATIONS AS CALLED FOR UNDER THE GENERAL AGREEMENT OF THE CONTRACT. IN VIEW OF THE TENDENCY TO USE A HIGH PENETRATION TYPE OF ASPHALT BINDER IN THE NORTHERN AREA OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, TO CORRESPOND TO THE GEOGRAPHICAL CLIMATIC CONDITIONS, THE EVALUATION PROGRAM OF THE VIBRATORY COMPACTOR AS A FUTURE REPLACEMENT OF THE CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT MUST BE CAPABLE OF COMPACTING ALL DIFFERENT GRADES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURE, UNDER A VARIETY OF CONDITIONS AND MIX DESIGN. THE EVALUATION PROGRAM FOUND THAT IF THE VIBRATORY ROLLERS WERE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A TANDEM STEEL ROLLER, EQUAL OR BETTER RESULTS COULD BE OBTAINED AS COMPARED TO THE MARSHALL DESIGN DENSITY. IN ADDITION, IF THE CONTRACTOR PLANNED HIS COMPACTION PROCEDURE AND ROLLING SEQUENCES, AN INCREASE IN PLANT/ROAD PRODUCTION COULD BE ACHIEVED. /RATAOC/
