THE EFFECT OF MINERAL FILLER ON THE VISCOSITY OF ASPHALT CEMENT

THE EFFECT OF MINERAL FILLER ON THE CONSISTENCY (CONVENIENTLY MEASURED BY VISCOSITY) OF SEVERAL ASPHALT CEMENTS IN THE VICINITY OF 300F. WERE EXAMINED. SINCE ASPHALT CEMENT IS A THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL, THE VARIATION OF VISCOSITY WITH FILLER CONTENT, PARTICULARLY AT THE HIGH MIXING TEMPERATURES, MUST BE UNDERSTOOD IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT PROPER MIX DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION. THE MINERAL FILLER WAS A FINELY DIVIDED LIMESTONE MATERIAL, ALL OF WHICH PASSED THE NO. 200 U.S. STANDARD SEIVE. THE ASPHALT CEMENTS CONSIDERED WERE ALL CLASSED AS 85-100 PENETRATION GRADE BUT DID HAVE VARYING TEMPERATURE SUSCEPTIBILITY. SUITABLE TESTING EQUIPMENT WAS DEVELOPED WHICH ENABLED MIXING THE FILLER MATERIAL WITH THE ASPHALT CEMENT AND TO DETERMINE THE VISCOSITY OF THE ASPHALT-FILLER MIXTURE AT VARIOUS FILLER CONTENTS UP U/ 30% BY WEIGHT OF THE MIXTURE. THE TEST RESULTS INDICATED THAT THE LOGARITHM OF THE RELATIVE VISCOSITY OF THE MIXTURE TESTED IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE FILLER VOLUME CONCENTRATION AND MAY BE EXPRESSED BY A SIMPLE RELATIONSHIP. SOME DISCUSSION IS GIVEN WITH REGARD TO INVESTIGATING VARIOUS FILLER MATERIALS AND THE EFFECT THIS MIGHT HAVE ON THE VISCOSITY OF AN ASPHALT-FILLER MIXTURE. /CGRA/
