EVALUATION OF THIN HOT-MIX SURFACINGS USED ON ONTARIOS HIGHWAYS

THIS PRELIMINARY STUDY IS THE INITIAL PHASE OF AN INVESTIGATION OF SEVERAL TYPES OF THIN, HOT-MIX BITUMINOUS MIXTURES INTENDED FOR USE IN RESURFACING. THESE MIXES WERE SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED BY COMMERCIAL MANUFACTURERS TO SUPPLANT PREVIOUSLY USED THIN SURFACINGS KNOWN AS SHEET ASPHALTS. THE NEED FOR THIN-SURFACING COURSES AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUITABLE SPECIFICATIONS IS DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE BASIC MIX DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. METHODS OF APPLICATION AND THE PROBLEMS PECULIAR TO EACH MIX ARE DESCRIBED AND THE SUITABILITY OF THE VARIOUS MIXES FOR SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. TEST RESULTS RELATING TO LABORATORY WORK AND TO EXPERIMENTAL TEST SECTIONS OF HIGHWAYS, ARE GIVEN AND DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. CONSIDERABLE DATA TABULATION IS GIVEN WHICH LISTS THE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS, TENTATIVE SKID RESISTANCE TESTS RESULTS USING A PENDULUM TESTER AND COST COMPARISON OF THE MIXES. /CGRA/
