AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE STRENGTH PARAMETERS OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE

THE INFLUENCE OF SEVERAL VARIABLES ON THE STRENGTH PARAMETERS OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WAS INVESTIGATED. THE STRENGTH PARAMETERS CONSIDERED WERE THE COHESION, THE ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION, AND ELASTIC MODULUS, AS DETERMINED BY THE TRIAXIAL TEST METHOD. IN THE CASE OF THE SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS THE EFFECTS OF VARIATIONS IN METHOD OF SAMPLE PREPARATION, METHOD OF TEST, MATERIAL PROPERTIES, AND VOLUMETRIC PROPORTIONS OF COMPACTED SPECIMENS, WERE CONSIDERED. IN THE CASE OF THE ELASTIC MODULUS, THE VARIABLES OF LOADING VERSUS REBOUND, STRESS LEVEL, CONFINING PRESSURE, NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS OF LOAD AND TEST TEMPERATURE, WERE CONSIDERED. THE STUDY OF THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS WAS BASED ON AN ANALYSIS OF PUBLISHED DATA FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF MIXES. THE STUDY OF THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ELASTIC MODULUS WAS BASED ON A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF A SINGLE TYPICAL MIX. THE REBOUND ELASTIC MODULUS WAS FOUND TO BE SUBSTANTIALLY INDEPENDENT OF STRESS LEVEL OR NUMBER OF REPETITIONS OF LOAD, BUT WAS FOUND TO BE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE DEVIATOR STRESS YIELD STRENGTH. THE EFFECTS OF CONFINING PRESSURE AND TEST TEMPERATURE ON THE ELASTIC MODULUS THUS CORRESPONDED TO THE EFFECTS OF THESE VARIABLES ON THE DEVIATOR STRESS YIELD STRENGTH. THE COHESION WAS GREATLY AFFECTED BY THE COMPACTION TEMPERATURE, COMPACTION ENERGY, RATE OF STRAIN, TEST TEMPERATURE, AGGREGATE PARTICLE SHAPE AND SURFACE TEXTURE, AND VOLUME OF BITUME AT 5% AIR VOIDS. IN GENERAL, THE ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION WAS AFFECTED BY THESE VARIABLES ALSO BUT TO A LESSER EXTENT. /CGRA/A/RRL/
