COMPARATIVE MEASUREMENTS OF ABSOLUTE VISCOSITIES /H BA VISCOMETER-HOPPLER CONSISTOMETER/

A COMPARISON IS BEING CONDUCTED OF MEASUREMENTS OF SIMILAR BITUMENS CARRIED OUT BY VISCOSITY DEVICES OF VERY DIFFERENT DESIGNS. THE APPARATUS USED BY THE INSTITUT DE SERBIE D ESSAIS DES MATERIAUX IS THE HOPPLER CONSISTOMETER WHICH OPERATES BY HETEROGENEOUS DEFORMATION OF THE BINDER SUBJECTED TO IMPACT BY A LOADED SPHERE. THE APPARATUS USED BY THE L.C.P.C. IS THE H BA VISCOMETER WHICH OPERATES BY HOMOGENEOUS DEFORMATION OF THE BINDER BETWEEN CONE AND PLATE. THE AUTHOR OF THIS REPORT HAS INVESTIGATED FOUR BINDERS AND PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS IN TABLES AND GRAPHS THE SCALES OF WHICH ALLOW COMPARISON WITH THE CURVES OBTAINED BY THE HOPPLER CONSISTOMETER. THE DISCUSSION EMPHASIZES THE NEWTONIAN BEHAVIOUR OF TWO SAMPLES, AND THE VERY GOOD AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO VISCOSITY DEVICES WITH REFERENCE TO THESE SAMPLES. THE TWO OTHERS SHOW ABNORMAL BEHAVIOUR. THE DETERMINATION OF THE ABSOLUTE VISCOSITIES OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS MEETS WITH SERIOUS DIFFICULTIES WHENEVER THE PRODUCTS DEALT WITH DIFFER APPRECIABLY IN THEIR BEHAVIOUR FROM THE NORMAL LAWS. IN THIS CASE IT IS OF IMPORTANCE TO USE APPARATUS WHICH REQUIRES UNIFORM VELOCITY GRADIENTS IN THE WHOLE MASS OF THE BINDER TESTED UNDER SHEAR.
