TESTING FOR DEBONDING OF ASPHALT FROM AGGREGATES

THE REPORT PRESENTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF STRIPPING SUSCEPTIBILITY OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. IN THE NEW METHOD A REGULAR HVEEM SPECIMEN (4"D X 2 1/2"H) WAS WATER SATURATED AT 1220F. THEN THE SPECIMEN WAS SUBJECTED TO REPEATED PORE WATER PRESSURE. THE EFFECTS OF THE EXPOSURE ON TENSILE STRENGTH WAS EXPRESSED AS RETAINED STRENGTH DETERMINED WITH A DOBULE PUNCH PROCEDURE. THE WORK SHOWED THAT THE METHOD RESPONDED TO VARIATIONS IN TYPE OF AGGREGATE, CLEANLINESS OF AGGREGATE, AND ASPHALT CONTENT IN A DIRECTION DICTATED BY EXPERIENCE. COMPARATIVE RESULTS WITH THE IMMERSION COMPRESSION TEST ARE PRESENTED. /FHWA/
