ROAD TEST ONE-MD: EFFECT OF CONTROLLED TRUCK AXLE LOADINGS ON CONCRETE PAVEMENT

TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON A 1.1-MI. SECTION OF PORTLAND- CEMENT-CONCRETE PAVEMENT NEAR LA PLATA, MARYLAND, TO DETERMINE THE RELATIVE EFFECTS OF FOUR DIFFERENT AXLE LOADS ON A CONCRETE PAVEMENT. THE LOADS EMPLOYED WERE 18,000 LB. AND 22,400 LB. ON SINGLE AXLES, AND 32,000 LB. AND 44,800 LB. ON TANDEM AXLES. THERE WERE FOUR SEPARATE TEST SECTIONS WITH TRUCKS SELECTED FOR EACH SECTION TO OBTAIN THE HIGHEST PRACTICABLE RATE OF ACCELERATION BETWEEN 10 AND 40 MPH. ON THE EXISTING ROAD PROFILE. CONTROLLED-TRAFFIC TESTS WERE CONDUCTED FROM JUNE THROUGH DECEMBER 1950, SOIL AND STRAIN TESTS MADE IN 1951. THE ANALYSES OF THESE DATA, WHICH INCLUDED 6,000 SOIL TESTS AND 12,000 STRAIN AND DEFLECTION READINGS, WERE COMPLETED IN APRIL 1952. THE QUALITY OF THE CONCRETE IN THE TEST PAVEMENT CONFORMED CLOSELY WITH THE QUALITY OBTAINED IN CONCRETE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION (AVERAGE OF ALL TESTS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH 6,825 POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH, MODULUS OF RUPTURE 785 PSI.). IN ADDITION TO LIMITED PRELIMINARY SOIL TESTS MADE ON SAMPLES TAKEN FROM ALONG THE EDGE OF THE PAVEMENT BEFORE TRAFFIC OPERATION STARTED, MORE THAN 1,300 SOIL SAMPLES WERE TAKEN FROM BENEATH THE PAVEMENT AFTER THE TEST TRAFFIC WAS STOPPED AND A LARGE NUMBER OF DEFLECTION AND STRESS MEASUREMENTS MADE. SOILS OF VARIOUS CLASSIFICATIONS WERE FOUND UNDER EACH OF THE TEST LANES. THE RESEARCH DEVELOPED INFORMATION ON: (1) LOAD-STRESS AND LOAD-DEFLECTION RELATIONS FOR SLABS ON GRANULAR SOIL WHERE NO PUMPING EXISTED, FOR SLABS ON FINE-GRAINED SOIL PRIOR TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PUMPING AND FOR SLABS ON FINE-GRAINED SOIL AFTER PUMPING HAD DEVELOPED, (2) COMPARISONS OF THE EFFECTS OF SINGLE- AND TANDEM- AXLE VEHICLES, (3) EFFECT OF SPEED AND TRANSVERSE PLACEMENT OF VEHICLE, LOAD TRANSFER, FAULTING AND WARPING OF THE SLAB ON THE MAGNITUDE OF STRESSES AND DEFLECTIONS CAUSED BY LOADS, AND (4) STRESSES RESULTING FROM RESTRAINED WARPING OF THE SLAB.
